ABOUT THE PERFORMANCE
PARTHO SAROTHY is one of the finest Sarod musicians of India, accompanying his great guru Pandit Ravi Shankar over the past few decades and performing in prestigious places across the world such as Royal Alberts Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall, Barbican Center in England, the Kremlin Hall, USSR, and Carnegie Hall, USA to name a few. His music embodies the true heritage of Hindustani Raag dari music. His virtuosity on the Sarod makes his exploration of Raagas a true exercise in harmony and tranquility, making his meditative approach to his music soar to unscaled heights.
ABHIJIT BANERJEE having accompanied the legendary Pandit Nikhil Banerjee on world tour in 1984, is considered among the top class of percussion tabla players from India and is one of the most sought after creative artists in the realm of Indian classical music. Abhijit has crafted a unique style and creative approach which has brought him accolades and awards throughout the world. He is known for his sensitivity, skill and deep sense of musicality. Apart from his contributions to Indian music he has delved into a diverse variety of world music crossover as both a performer and composer.
This will be a performance on the stringed instrument Sarod with an accompaniment of percussion Tabla soon after the evenings opener. There will be a short interval before the second piece.
A rare one of a kind freestyle Sitar talent, Nashville-based Vikas Kancherla takes the stage for the show opener. Self-taught on the sitar from a young age, his guidance has come from his own exploration within, coming up with mesmerizing tunes unheard of and creating thrilling freestyle improv. In his own words, "I have no real agenda, only to lose myself in my strum and hopefully include my listeners into that journey."
This will be a short freestyle solo performance on the stringed instrument Sitar to start the event at 7:30 PM
ABOUT PARTHO SAROTHY
With his long and very illustrious training under those great gurus coupled with an inherent creative sensibility, Partho’s music is truly a symphony in serenity. Born in 1960, Partho is based in Calcutta and has been performing for the last 45 years in India and all over the world as a soloist and also along with his great guru Pandit Ravi Shankar. In India, he has conducted performances at almost every major music festival like Doverlane, S.R.A Festival, the Savai Gandharva festival in Pune, IMG fest in Mumbai and many more.
Partho started his musical training under his father, late Sudhamoy Chowdhury, who was a disciple of Pandit Radhikamohan Moitra, the great Sarod Maestro, Partho then took lessons for nearly a decade from Ustad Dhyanesh Khan - son and disciple of the legendary Sarod Player, Ustad Ali Akbar Khan. Since 1980, Partho has been under the direct guidance of the late, Bharat Ratna Pandit Ravi Shankar, one of India’s greatest Musicians.
ABOUT ABHIJIT BANERJEE
Abhijit has accompanied on tabla nearly all of the largest names of Hindustani classical musician including Pt.Ravi Shankar, Late Pt.Nikhil Banerjee, Begum Parweena Sultana, Pt.Jasraj, Pt. Shiv Kumar Sharma, Dr.Balamurali Krishnan to name a few. As a tabla soloist he has also left his distinct mark through numerous performances and publications in India & abroad.
Abhijit has scored music for TV serieals, Documentaries, Puppet shows, Dramas and short films such as The Tales of Tista, About Ram (a prodution of KATKATHA group) Gulbadan, Ephigenia and 13 sisters (a Production of Whittier College, Los Angles) Dik Darshan & won the National Award for Documentary Music for the film about Calcutta ‘The Trail’, which screened in the Munich and Amsterdam film festivals.
In addition to a highly successful career in Indian Classical music, his crossover work includes collaborations with musicians such as Ry Cooder, Larry Corryell and Trilok Gurtu, Jon Santos, Keny Endo and many other. He has also collaborated with Balinese Gamelan Artiste Dewa Barata of CUDAMANI group and produced Rabindranath Tagore's AMI CHITRANGADA which was first staged with Balinese and Indian Dancers and later was released as music Album. Abhijit founded his own ensemble TARANG performing his original compositions.
A freestyle sitar artist from Franklin, Tennessee, Vikas has been playing sitar since the age of seven. Being self-taught and perfecting his craft over the years, he developed a unique freestyle form never heard before. Largely staying out of the public eye until recent times, his performances and style is quickly gaining a repertoire for it's uniqueness and thrilling impact.
